Social Media Marketing Intern (Volunteer)

Company: FairfieldWorks, a 2nd & Civic Media community
Location: Suisun Valley, CA. Remote/Hybrid

About Us

2nd & Civic Media is the parent org behind a small network of hyper-local, community-good hiring platforms. FairfieldWorks is the first one. NapaWorks and ChicoWorks are next. 2nd & Civic owns and runs the shared back-end infrastructure, but each local "...Works" site is run day-to-day by someone who actually lives there.

FairfieldWorks exists because the Fairfield-Suisun area doesn't have a hiring resource of its own. Local employers end up sorting through unvetted resumes from Sacramento or Oakland, or fighting algorithmic noise on national job boards and social media. We're not a commercial software company chasing venture funding. We're a bootstrapped, community-rooted initiative built by people who live here and are invested in this region's small businesses. Every listing comes from a real, locally owned employer, with transparent pay and no data selling.

The Role

We're looking for a Social Media Marketing Intern to help us build and run the FairfieldWorks presence from the ground up. This isn't managing an existing playbook. You'd be helping write it with us.

You'll split your time between three audiences:

  • B2B (employers): local business owners, chamber members, and community organizations, the people who post jobs.
  • B2C (job seekers): local residents looking for work close to home, the people who apply.
  • B2B (local community owners): future local owners of their own .works/work community platform.

What You'll Do

  • Create and schedule content across Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, Reddit (local subreddits), and TikTok
  • Experiment with free tools: We want you to explore what tools are available, what their capabilities may be, and how they can make this function core to the business
  • Help build a content calendar and template system that holds up even if nobody posts for a couple weeks (batch-created, not improvised day to day)
  • Draft "now hiring" and "we just made a local hire" posts that highlight real Suisun Valley businesses
  • Support outreach to local Facebook groups, community boards, and organizations like the library, workforce center, community college, and Chamber of Commerce
  • Track basic engagement metrics and help grow our local email list
  • Occasionally help with light outreach copy (emails, DMs) to local employers, alongside the founders
  • Teach us (leadership) so we can include your successes going forward to new locations

Who We're Looking For

  • You're a Suisun Valley native or long-term local. Fairfield, Suisun City, Cordelia, Napa, or Vacaville. This isn't a formality. Knowing the neighborhoods, the local Facebook groups, the businesses people actually talk about, and the community's tone is core to doing this job well.
  • Comfortable posting and engaging across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Nextdoor
  • Reliable and organized. You can keep a content calendar running without daily hand-holding.
  • Genuinely interested in community-building, local small business, or social good work
  • No professional experience required. This is an internship, and we'll teach you what we can as we build alongside you.

The Honest Part

This is a part-time, unpaid, volunteer role. FairfieldWorks is self-funded (pursuing a California Social Good status) and not currently generating revenue, and we want to be upfront about that from the start so you can make an informed decision. In exchange, here's what we can offer:

  • College credit: we're glad to sign internship/practicum agreements or "units" paperwork for students who need it
  • Real, resume-worthy experience building social strategy and content for a platform that's actually launching
  • A real seat on a founding team. Your ideas will shape how this organization shows up publicly, not just execute someone else's plan.
  • A letter of recommendation and reference once you complete the internship
  • Hands-on experience in the social good, community-focused space, alongside practical B2B and B2C marketing skills

Time Commitment

Flexible and part-time. We'll work around your school or work schedule. We care more about consistency than hours; a few reliable hours a week beats a big burst followed by silence.

In your application, we will ask that you send us a short note about why the Suisun Valley community matters to you, along with any social accounts or content you'd like to share (a polished portfolio isn't required)
